Common Reasons for Oven Repair

Ovens are versatile appliances that are a staple in almost every home. Their many options to bake, broil, clean, and and sometimes to convect, invites an opportunity for something to go wrong.

When your oven breaks down, you don't need to panic immediately. There are some common problems that you might be able to fix yourself. If you cannot get it working, we are ready and able to help.

    Oven Temperature is Incorrect

When you turn on the oven, it should preheat to your set temperature and then maintain that temperature. This problem might take some time to figure out, and it might only be detected with certain foods, but if your food is constantly overcooked or undercooked, then the temperature is wrong.

You can often recalibrate the temperature yourself, and you will find instructions on how to do that in the instruction manual (if you still have it). You might only be able to change the temperature by a maximum of 35 degrees, so if this does not solve the problem, you will have to call out a professional to take a look.

    Oven Won’t Turn On

Worse than the temperature not being correct is your oven not turning on—one of the most common oven issues. But, this is another problem that might have a simple solution and one that you can tackle.

The most common solution is a power issue. Start with the oven, and ensure it is still plugged into the outlet. If it is, try your breaker box to see if the fuse has tripped.

If that does not fix the issue, there might be more at play. It could be a faulty connection, a loose wire, the wrong amount of power, or circuitry that’s gone bad. If there is power to some parts and not others, then you likely have a faulty part. When you venture into these waters, it’s best to call a professional to take a look, find the broken part, and either fix it on the spot or order a replacement.

    Oven Light Doesn’t Work

If the light does not come on, first try replacing the bulb with a new bulb labeled specifically for appliances. These bulbs are designed for extreme heat or cold. If that doesn’t work, check the power as detailed in the example above. If these measures don’t fix it, and you want a working oven light, you should call an oven repair expert to diagnose the issue. Sometimes, the fix is easy, but that’s only after you diagnose the problem.

Oven Door Won’t Open or Shut

Some ovens have a self-clean cycle that locks the door until completed. This stops anyone from being burnt as the self-clean cycle runs at high heat. We caution against forcing your oven door open when it doesn’t open. Doing so can cause further damage and leave you with a floor full of broken glass.

If the door does not close, you probably need to replace the hinge (and possibly the door). This fix can be tackled, but you need to know a little about what you are doing. Since you’ll need to completely remove the door and some additional parts, this job is best left to the pros.

    Oven Won’t Self-Clean

The self-cleaning feature on ovens won’t turn on if the locking mechanism for the door won’t lock. This is the most common reason for the self-cleaner not working and can be fixed with a replacement part and some oven repair expertise.

    Burner Heats too Slowly

The reasons behind this problem will depend on your oven type. If you have a gas oven, check the burner to ensure there are no blockages (after shutting off the gas and power first). If the gas cannot get through the small holes, there will not be enough heat generated. For an electric stove, ensure that the element is firmly in place. They can often be shifted slightly when the stove parts are removed for cleaning. If you can’t fix the problem yourself or don’t want to, you know what to do… give us a call!
